For those who haven't come across it yet, EveryBlock is an extremely exciting, web-based project that was developed here in Chicago and launched earlier this year. The site provides users in the Windy City, San Francisco, and New York with information -- narrowed right down to your block -- on everything from crimes to business permits to restaurant reviews.
The integration of so much hyperlocal data is really unprecedented and has the potential for some fascinating applications. For instance, check out this "Special Report" the EveryBlock crew just released on Operation Crooked Code, the federal probe that recently led to the arrest of 15 Chicago developers, contractors, and city inspectors. They used their mapping and browsing software to tag the location of each alleged crime and annotated these plot points with the relevant excerpts from the indictments. The result is a truly unique look at the case.
