Today, Politico ran an article on how "charges and countercharges over tax liens are flying back and forth in a number of House campaigns," noting that 11th District GOP congressional candidate Martin Ozinga has run into some trouble on this issue. In the initial version of the article, they wrote that "newspapers and bloggers unearthed" his concrete company's record of delinquent tax payments:
Illinois Republican Martin Ozinga, who is running to succeed retiring GOP Rep. Jerry Weller, weathered a spate of bad publicity earlier this year when newspapers and bloggers unearthed thousands of dollars in late tax payments that his family businesses had made in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.
Of course, no local newspapers actually covered this issue -- only yours truly. So the Politico changed the above sentence to read:
Illinois Republican Martin Ozinga, who is running to succeed retiring GOP Rep. Jerry Weller, took a hit earlier this year over thousands of dollars in late tax payments that his family businesses had made in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.
And added this correction:
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story overstated the extent of publicity surrounding late tax payments made by the family business of Rep. Martin Ozinga.
Fair enough.
But hold on a sec ... "Rep. Martin Ozinga"? How'd that happen so fast? Did Democrat Debbie Halvorson forfeit the election in the hours between the first edition and the update?
We'll keep you updated on any corrections to the correction.
