Sierra Club Responds To State Park Closures

As a result of the cuts to the Department of National Resources announced by the governor's office yesterday, 11 state parks will close on November 1 and 39 of the agency's employees will lose their jobs.  Today, Illinois Sierra Club director Jack Darin responded:

Illinois Democrats may be hugging out in Denver, but back home on Thursday 39 IDNR employees were notified that they'll be out of a job November 1st as a result of budget cuts announced by Governor Blagojevich in July. [...]

These layoffs and closings would be totally unnecessary if our leaders in Springfield would get together on a budget solution. There is still time - but the Governor's action Thursday started the clock ticking.

We need the General Assembly and the Governor to act before the end of September to restore the cuts, keep these parks open, and keep those who run them and look out for our natural resources on the job.

I'm so sick of Gov. Rod, Speaker Madman and Illinois politics in general. This is just another fine example of the total failure of our fine state government.

Not only are they closing some beautiful parks, the ones that remain open are understaffed with overflowing trashbins, filthy restrooms, muddy campsites, broken picnic tables etc, etc. Then to top it off, they charge $30.00 a night for a campsite on holiday weekends. You can get a motel room for not much more than that. This Labor Day, I chose to stay at a federal park on Carlyle Lake. It is only $14.00 per night and the facilities are cleaner and better kept. There are actually staff that make rounds regularly over the weekend. DNR uses retiree campground hosts to try to maintain order and safety. Clearly, this Governor has no appreciation for the outdoors. It will take years to undue the damage this idiot is imposing on the citiziens of Illinois. That doesn't even take into account the loss in revenue from tourists who have also gained an appreciattion for the beautiful resources Illinois has to offer. This self admiring jackass is an embarrasment to all Democrats who are defenders of the environment. We can only pray the indictments come sooner rather than later.
