One of the hottest state legislative races this year pits Rep. Paul Froehlich (D-Schaumburg) against Republican challenger Anita Forte-Scott. As the Pioneer Press reported on Thursday, Froehlich has attracted $450,000 in contributions since July, including a large amount of money from the state party. Forte-Scott has raised about $180,000 during that same period, the bulk of it coming from groups "such as United Republican Fund, House Republican Organization and the Illinois Republican Party."
Well Forte-Scott got some more help this week from Rosanna Pulido (above), who directs the Illinois branch of the Minutemen Project, a national anti-immigrant organization whose leadership has ties to white nationalists and whose actions in the Southwest have helped foster a climate of intolerance in the border states. Here in the Prairie State, Pulido is known for her fearmongering rhetoric -- on the Illinois Review blog and elsewhere in the media -- such as her claim before Congress that Chicago is "under siege by illegal aliens who speak Spanish, use public services, and take away jobs from citizens." During a May appearance on a local radio show, she suggested that the Chicago Police bring AK-47s to an (ultimately peaceful) protest by a group of immigrant rights activists.
Now she's cut a robocall for Forte-Scott, warning that Froehlich "voted twice to give illegal aliens Illinois drivers licenses." Have a listen:
Here's the script:
Hi, this is Rosanna Pulido, director of the Illinois Minutemen Project. If you're like me, and believe illegal immigrants should not get Illinois drivers licenses, then I need your help. Your state representative, Paul Froehlich, has voted twice to give illegal aliens Illinois drivers licenses. That's right -- twice he voted to give illegal aliens Illinois drivers licenses. Let's not give Paul Froehlich another chance. This election, join me in supporting Anita Forte-Scott for state representative. She is the only candidate who opposes drivers licenses for illegal aliens. Paid for by Friends for Anita Forte-Scott.
