IL Officials To Unveil Statewide Education Program
A team of past and present government officials will unveil Advance
Illinois, a new statewide education initiative, today. The program is
described as “an independent, objective voice to promote a public
education system in Illinois that prepares all students to be ready for
work, college and democratic citizenship."
Funding Woes Could Stop Rockford Mass Transit
Local officials warn that the Rockford Mass Transit District may grind to a halt in December unless the state covers a backlog of reimbursements. State subsidies, which represent more than half the district’s budget, are behind by $4 million. Meanwhile, ridership is up.
Union, City Officials Strike Deal To Reduce Layoffs
A tentative deal between Mayor Daley and union officials has been
struck to spare roughly 100 jobs over the coming year. Union leaders
have agreed to new rules aimed at reducing the city's overtime costs,
as well as planned furloughs around the holidays. In exchange, the
mayor is offering cash incentives as high as $15,000 to encourage
retirements among eligible employees.
"Gay-Friendly" School Broadens Mission
The proposal to open Chicago's first "gay-friendly" public high school has been reworked to include all disenfranchised groups of students with hopes of winning approval from the Chicago Board of Education on Wednesday. If the school is approved, it would open in 2010 under the name the Social Justice Solidarity High School.
