Around The Horn

Below are our daily picks from the Illinois blogosphere and media at large:

What Makes Roland Run?
This January 1998 Illinois Issues article offers some interesting background on Burris.

Way To Go, Madigans
Archpundit lays the blame for today's circus at the feet of House Speaker Michael Madigan and Attorney General Lisa Madigan, pointing out how they have delayed the impeachment process.  "If this is what it would be like to have a Speaker and Governor as father and daughter," he writes, "I've had enough already."

Burris The Lobbyist
Politico's Ben Smith takes a look at Burris' lobbying record, which shows that he represented the Illinois Association of Mortgage Bankers in 2007.

Jim Thompson was just on NPR saying the Burris nomination is legal and must go forward.

Well, it's certainly legal to make the pick.

But it may also be legal to block it.

I actually lay the blame for this chapter in the dark comedy that is Blagojevich not on Lisa Madigan, but on Pat Fitzgerald. Pat filed a thin complaint unlike indictments he's filed in the past that were long and detailed with separate allegations (take a look at some of his past complaints and you'll see what I mean--they are of public record), and I have no doubt that he knows it because he's a really smart guy. If Pat would have thought less politically and more legally, then we'd really be talking about something and Blagojevich would not have been emboldened. I have no particular love for Blagojevich, but I can sure understand why he's decided to go on a big offensive. Any good lawyer would have advised him on a similar strategy. Other than that, I am still mystified why Democrats are rushing to deliver our Obama Senate seat to one of the most lying and seriously corrupt people in office today, Mark Kirk. This very blog has reported on several of his lies. His lies to get us into Iraq make Blagojevich look like a choir boy.

Kudos to Rep. Danny K. Davis. Its been reported that Blago offered him the Senate appointment and Mr. Davis turned it down.

Class, values, and ethics. Wow!
