The Sun-Times reports today that Rep. Phil Hare is not happy with the amount of mass transit spending including the current version of the House stimulus bill:
"There's very little for mass transit and rail," said Hare, who wants an Amtrak line from Chicago to Des Moines, Iowa.
The article also highlighted complaints about the amount of transportation funding from Illinois Reps. Dan Lipinski and Aaron Schock. But it wasn't clear if they were demanding more overall spending (including for highways and roads) or just mass transit.
As we noted last week, the House's funding formula for Illinois includes $350 million for "transit capital" and $190 million for "fixed guideway modernization" (which will likely include a good amount of rail spending, as well as some money for high-occupancy-vehicle lanes). Meanwhile, over $1 billion is currently headed for road and bridge construction in the Prairie State.
As of yet, there hasn't been much reaction from local transit advocates or elected officials to the House plan, so it's good to see Hare raising his voice.
