Republicans in the Senate have consistently said that they do not
intend to defeat an unemployment extension this fall. Instead, they just
want the Democratic leadership to consider some amendments
they've drafted about the bills' funding mechanism. But if really want
to provide more assistance to the nation's jobless, they don't seem
urgent to get it done.
In an interview with the New York Times' Carl Huse today, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) said that his caucus is "getting ready to clear the way" for H.R. 3548, but he offered no exact details about when that might occur. Same goes for Sen. Judd Gregg (R-New Hampshire), the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, who told the AP that procedural differences will be ironed out soon without providing any specific timeline.
With thousands exhausting their benefits daily, Sen. Dick Durbin continues to insist that action needs to be taken quickly. On WLS' Connected to Chicago with Bill Cameron yesterday, the Majority Whip explained why the extra insurance is so crucial in this economic climate (You can listen to the entire interview here):

All the Dems need is 60 votes for cloture - what are they waiting for???
wklein (not verified) on Mon, 10/19/2009 - 18:36
The votes are there. I'm not sure why this hasn't been put to a vote. This isn't a party line thing--many Republicans will vote for it as well. If they don't then they should force them to filibuster the bill, forcing them to come out of their hole and be counted as obstructionists. Call their bluff. The other way out is to use reconcilliation, which requires only 51 votes. The Republicans used it for an up and down vote when they passed that tax cut legislation which cut taxes for only 1% of the richest Americans.
Anguillaman (not verified) on Mon, 10/19/2009 - 18:55
As usual...the Repubs only care about the wealthies 2%...been that way for as long as I can recall....and its that way now..they could care less about the unemployed. I thought the Dems control both houses and the Presidency..why must everything be agreed to by the Republicans prior to moving forward on any issue or moving the country forward. For those that vote...don't forget this..don't vote Repub ever ever again.

I am betting it is more Republicans than Democrats holding this up! Read the list of names and remember them when you vote. Email them to everyone you know. The snobs who are claiming the unemployed are free-loaders need to realize that many of us are on umenployment for the first time ever after many, many years of hard work. Even the most menial jobs here in Florida are getting over 500 applications. Trying to get a job is like buying a lotter ticket! They are bickering over a tax of 14.00 per employee! Are you kidding me? Take down the names and remember them when you vote!

I am livid. I just do not understand why there is a stall to get this bill passed. There are so many of us who have worked dilligently and had successful careers who are NOW affected by this recession and high unemployment. It is painfully obvious there is no sense of urgency for this bill to be passed. My career of 25 years in HR Managment and my husbands 35 year career in Project Management have both been down sized. We had a combined income of close to $250K, now we have NOTHING. I haven't worked in 2 years, he hasn't worked in 1. We are about to lose everything. We have never received unemployment up until now. My State Extended Benefit offered by the Governor of Ga exhausted 2 weeks ago. We are down to $355 a week. Our mortgage has not been paid in months....and they are lolly gagging in congress about the funding to extend unemployment. I don't care where the money comes from. Not really concerned about the deficit at this time. Get it from Iraq, get it from Wall Street...I don't care! I just know the bill needs to be passed IMMEDIATELY!! The longer congress continues to take the livelihood of those who are tax paying citizens for granted...trust me, the tables will turn next year when it is re-election time.

You can afford mac and cheese? You're one of the lucky ones. If this doesn't make you vote Dem next time, you are a lost cause. How much abuse do you need to take from the GOP before you wise up? They don't care about you. The don't care about real Americans like us. They don't put Country First. That's just a false advertising campaign slogan. It's only about screwing Obama and the Democrats. And turn off Glenn Beck. You are being fed craziness and lies. Obama's not a racist or a socialist. Instead of writing Professor Crazypants Beck, call your senators and call Jon Kyl (R-AZ, Minority Whip), Harry Reid (D-NV, Majority Leader)and Mitch McConnell (R-KY, Minority Leader). Tell them to stop holding the bill hostage.

I was a Republican, but no more!! I'm older single woman, out of job for over 18 month. Unemployment benefits is not a "handout" I worked 28 years, and I want to work, but there is no hope for someone like me! So many young people out there who would hire me?
Shame on Republicans, that loser Gleen Beck and rest of Fox group. I lost my house, my car, live in a small room in someone house, without this check I lose that too!

Hello Everyone!
I have been keeping aprised of the horrific nonsense regarding H.R. 3548 for Exenteded Unemployment Benefits. Unfortunatley, the SENTATE FINANCE COMMITTEE is comprised of 11 REPUBLICANS and 9 DEMOCRATS. The GOP SENATORS of the FINANCE COMMITTEE is "the root of all evil"! My sentiments were the same regarding 60 Democratic Senators, overpowering the deal - wondering why the 'hold-up". And, yes I agree, pressure the Media and Senators for URGENT ACTION NOW.
Dennis (not verified) on Mon, 10/19/2009 - 13:37
This is a complete and utter failure of the govt. I have been out of work since 08! Not just sitting around either. I have applied at every place I think might be hiring, and have sent out more resumes then I can count!
All I keep hearing about on the news is Health care! WHO CARES! When we can not afford to eat, even getting cold medicine is out of the question at the moment.
Out system is broke, our leaders are out of touch and living high on the hog, let them walk a mile in our shoes!
WE THE PEOPLE, need to take a stand and make sure NOT ONE! Not a single senator that is holding this up is reelected. This is no longer a dem vs rep issue, it is effecting everyone!
Also where is our great leader on this? Why hasnt he put the pressure on them? He states today that we need to work on the employment issues, and there is what, 767 million in stimus money not spent, well there is the funding for the extension.
I hereby call out our great leader Mr Obama, and implore him to make a PUBLIC statement calling on the senate to finish this NOW, THIS WEEK, not sometime in the future, Lives, homes, familes are at stake, and I am sorry but Mr. Obama, the buck stops at you! You will be the one to pay the cost of this in 3 years! DO NOT let your people down! We are voters, fathers, mothers and countrymen! Do what is right by us, do your job!

Yeah, like the petition is something new! Please giave us a break. We have signed this petition ove and over agaiun since Labot Day, pergaps different versions of it! We have been contacting our senators our House reps, and the President. They do not give a damn! Obama has one thing in his mind and that is Health Care reform. Oh I forgot he likes his European excursions as well. Bella Pelosi is worried about her hair staying in place and the Republicans are procrastinating on purpose because they are mad about Obama's obsession with Health Care and his doing nothing to improve the job situation. You can jump up and down in blogs and in sending emails. Nothing will happen until they see people taking to the streets! Peaceful marches is what needs to be happening right now, it is passed the stage of letter writing and BS to get them motivated.

The TARP money should have gone into social services and real job training and job creation. How could they do this to our great country??? They are RUINING America. I would like to apologize to Peter as he seems to have predicted this continued delay: Peter, I am sorry, you were right in your stated time line.
A lot of name calling, other types of non-productive ego-centric bickering... sparking righteous, albeit, unhelpful, indignation. That's just fine with the politicos as they are masters at the 'Let's you and him fight' game.
Many of us are doing the same thing the politicos are doing: feeding our ego at the expense of others instead of participating in an organized effort to end this tragedy.

I hope these senators realize their aides have been answering phones all day from irate taxpayers because of their stupid childish games and will every day until they vote yes on this bill. Blocking the bill is surely going to be their downfall because it hit Americans where it hurta and woke them up. Do these Republicans even care that all the unemployed vote and most of the posts I've read this week (especially today) are saying 2010 those that blocked this bill will be voted out! It's sad that billions have been given to Pakistan, the greedy Wall Street firms, the banks who put us all in jeopardy & AIG who should have gone bankrupt like every other American company does when they stay in the red too long. Worst of all these firms are setting aside obnoxious bonuses that far exceed those in 2007 before the economy tanked, and our elected politicians being run by lobbyists are allowing it to happen. Where is the fairness here? What happened to America that our government is so fast to approve obscene amounts of money to pigs like these but leave their own people high and dry to lose their homes, not be able to heat their homes (if they haven't been evicted yet) or feed their children, and who are beginning to take their lives out of desperation. This extension should have been passed immediately since we the people will have to spend the rest of our lifetimes being taxed to death to cover the deficit these Republicans forced on us (and we didn't get to vote against it). At least we got the satisfaction of changing the guard in the White House to show our discontent! This total disregard of it's constituents by both parties seems to be causing people to unite and I don't think voting them out of office in 2010 is the only thing they will have to deal with this year. Something big is coming now that people are talking to each other and want to make government hear them. It's been a long time coming but we are mad as h_ll and aren't going to take it anymore!
Peter (not verified) on Mon, 10/19/2009 - 16:07
carole- the DemocRATS have the majority in the Senate. They could have voted "NO" to the 7.5 billion of nonmilitary aid to Pakistan. But of course, it is easy to blame it all on the Republicans while the DemocRATS just keep voting whatever Obama-baby wants. Either he gets his Healthcare Bill passed or nothing else matters to him. Of course Bella Pelosi's "God's Gift to America" (our Savior Obama) has said and done absolutely NOTHING about the UBE bill. But he did want the aid to Pakistan to pass - he made it very clear and guess what? the f---ing democRATS passed it. They could have voted down but no - they do not want to upset Obama - our Savior!
And what were they doing todat - the democRATS? They were busy discussing a bill about gay rights! I GUESS THAT IS A PRIORITY BECAUSE THE FAGGETS KNOW HOE TO GET TO THE STREETS AND PROTEST. THE UNEMPLOYED ARE SITTING LIKE DUCKS WAITING FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN BY OSMOSIS!

Please pass this bill.. I just had to sale my car and now it looks like the banks taking my home. I blame this on both the democrats and republicans. This is an economic crap in the face to the American people. Our leaders are out of touch with the times and in my opinion all leaders need to be changed.. including my senators in California.. I will be registering independent.. and voting for fresh ideas.
Our leaders should have saw this coming and prevented this from ever occurring..

There are enough articles stating the bill was blocked by the Republicans so need I say more! They are little children and need to be scolded for not caring. They also pushed the bailout so even though both parties are crap the Reps had 8 years to get it right and weren't capable. I was a Republican ALL my life but because of Bush I had to vote for a Democrat I wasn't happy with either. Lesser of two evils! How many others do you think did the same thing? The outcome in 2008 proved how unhappy people were with the Administration and the next election will also rid the White House of officials the taxpayers are disillusioned with. Before then a march showing our discontent would be awesome because without it change isn't going to be made on the side of the people. As Elizabeth Warren says, the banks & Wall Street are winning and the lobbyists need to be silenced.

That's right peter, it makes no since at all to give these people money, so that they can pay most of there the bills, and all the things you have to have to be alive, and it will stimulate the economy and help our Country, and all the taxes that will be paid by what we all spend our money on, and the next people's that spend that money, and so on and so on, that will help our Government.
This is exactly what the whole of Government want's to do to not help anyone or anything or itself. why they bring this bill out anyways there's nothing wrong with "YOUR WORLD" but yourself.

The two clueless Republicans holding up the unemployment extension bill H.R.3548 are Jon Kyle from Arizona (202) 224-4521 and Orrin Hatch from Utah (202) 224-5251.
Everyone give them a wakeup call for the unemployed who are now without benefits, and each week more join the list. Six million unemployed = Depression! Nationally, employers have dumped over 260,000 jobs, meaning that these are jobs that no longer exist.

I hate Republicans, my life is falling apart and all they care for is to play politics with the hard working people life. Sure if it was the largest tax cut in history for the wealthy they would of used budget reconciliation to make it pass. Dam the bastards

I just came to find out that the unemployment benefit would not be retroactive for the people who's benefit ended last month and been waiting for all the Republican amendment's to be added. This suck i been borrowing money last 4 weeks hopping once the bill get passed i will be able to get the benefits for those weeks. So every week that passes without a new extension is a week of lost payments.

Karla (not verified) on Tue, 10/20/2009 - 12:28
ask your senators to propose an amendment making the benefits RETROACTIVE to the date of passage of the bill in the House. That would remove much of the Republicans' incentive for keeping it stalled. Those who have continued applying for jobs would be able to recoup some of the money they are now borrowing in order to maintain their living expenses, and those who have not kept applying for jobs would not be eligible for the retroactive benefits. At least it would help some people, even those whose benefits expired before September, toward some of their living costs, and it could get the bill moving again.

I don't mean to be an ass BUT here is some food for thought that maybe the Senate should ponder... every minute 4.8 people lose their benefits and come closer to losing everything they have worked hard for.
No disrespect to Deleware and their wanted new national park BUT so far... about 20 folks have lost benefits while he talks and the UI extension is not voted on.....

CQ TODAY MIDDAY UPDATE
Oct. 20, 2009 – 1:50 p.m.
Extension of Jobless Benefits Tangled Up With Homebuyer Tax Credit
Legislation to extend unemployment benefits has become entangled with a bipartisan effort to extend a popular tax break for first-time homebuyers.
Johnny Isakson , R-Ga., wants to offer an amendment to the jobless benefits bill that would extend the $8,000 tax credit set to expire on Nov. 30 and expand it to all primary home purchases, first-time or otherwise.
But the administration is wary of an extension of the homebuyer’s credit, let alone an expansion. And some Senate Democrats say the Isakson effort should not be allowed to hold up action on the unemployment benefits bill.
Jack Reed , D-R.I., said Tuesday that the housing tax credit extension effort was “a worthy one” but should not be attached to the unemployment measure if that would delay enactment of the bill to help jobless Americans.
“That’s something that should be brought up,” Reed said, “but now is not the time.”
“Why are the Republicans holding up this bill?” asked Charles E. Schumer , D-N.Y. “Don’t they understand the anguish of millions of American families?”
Minority Whip Jon Kyl , R-Ariz., rejected the Democrats’ claims of obstruction by Republicans. He said he expects substantial support for the jobless benefits measure but the issue is “how you pay for it” and whether amendments are allowed.
Senate Republicans have twice objected to Democratic attempts to move the benefits extension by unanimous consent. The proposal would provide 14 additional weeks of unemployment assistance in all 50 states, and an additional six weeks on top of that in states with unemployment rates exceeding 8.5 percent.
A group of Senate Democrats led by Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire had objected to an earlier version of the Senate bill, which would have added 17 weeks in the 27 states with high unemployment rates but only four weeks in other states.
The House version of the bill, which passed 331-83 on Sept. 22, would provide an additional 13 weeks of benefits only to jobless people in high-unemployment states.

Some bad and some good news from CT. The bad news first, CT unemployment rate climbed to 8.4% in September. The good news for those whose UI benefits have already been terminated (or about to be terminated)...they get another 7 weeks of federally funded UEB. When my sister called DOL earlier she was told that checks should resume sometime in November - more likely during the first two weeks of November.
Please pass the word to any folks that you know in CT. This 7 weeks of federal aid is independent of the proposed 14+6 week Senate UEB bill.

Excuse me, fot those who are equating their lack of unemployment extended benefits with 9/11. I think that it is pathetic that you would even think to compare the two. Yes the situation is very bad but please go tell your story to kids that had their parents murdered at the 9/11 attacks. Go and tell your suffering to a mother and/or father who lost their son or daughter during 9/11. You can not be serious... if you are hungry go to a local food pantry and get fed. If you are homeless please go to a shelter or a friend's home. Whateevr it is that you are suffering is reversible. Only death ois irreversible and those who died on 9/11 can never reverse their destiny. You can. So please quit comparing your situation to 9/11 as what you are experiencing is just an adversity not "tragedy". Let's keep thing in perspective. By the way, nothing will happen unless you take a more proactive stance regarding the passing of the bill. Getting to the streets in a peaceful protest may be the best thing to catch the media attention as well as our politicians' and our President's attention. Change in the world history did not come about by people sitting at home crying over their lack and always blaming someone else, some other party - everyone and anyone but ourselves. I bet many here have tens of thousands of credit card debt, a hald a dozen falt screen plasma TVs, fancy kids cell phones with cameras, mp3s, you name it. It was aboiut time that we Americans were taught a lesson and that is to live within our means. Had we saved money all along instead of "charging it" and accumulating more debt, we would not need to freak out just a few weeks without unem0ployment benefits. That is why Europe is recovering much faster from this economic crisis - because the Europeans do not worship "credit". They save their money and once in a while when they have saved enough may go to some fancy vacation. They do not go to see Mickey in Disneyland by charging the trip to their credit card. It was about time that some spoiled Americans stopped spoiling their kids by taking them to see Mickey on "credit". Od course now everyone is hurting - not because people are actually starving - nobody starves in this country - ffod stamps and food pantries are all over the country. They are suffering because thwey can not afford to buy whatever luxuries ice cream and soda for example and...bottled water.....!!!! Please wake up and smell the coffee. It is unfortunate that the bill has not passed yet. It is as equally unfortunate that people have done absilutely nothing to prevent it from reaching this point. I said it a few weeks ago... paralyzed immobilized people do not accomplish much. History has taught us this but we always seem to foget the lessons of history. Now make sure you take to the streets the next time the abortion issue comes up ro gay rights or animal rights. But stay home in your couch just sending some emails when you lose your car, your home, your lifeline of income etc.

HE'S THE FOUNDER AND PAST PRESIDENT OF NORTHSIDE REALTY, ONE OF ATLANTA'S BIGGEST REAL ESTATE COMPANIES.!! NO SURPRISE, TYPICAL REPUBLICAN GREED. The bill will cost an additional 17 billion dollars!!! This is the crap holding up UI ext. pymts. to the needy middle class American workers & their families!
