The Sun-Times' Fran Spielman has described Mayor Daley's ongoing leasing of city assets as the "great Chicago sell-off," and it's as apt a title as we can think of:
The great Chicago sell-off started with the Skyway ($1.83 billion), continued with downtown parking garages ($563 million) and Midway Airport ($2.5 billion) and culminated with the December sale of Chicago parking meters ($1.15 billion).
The grassroots anger about this trend has been steadily rising as of late. Indeed, with every item we publish criticizing Daley's privatization schemes, a slew of supportive reader email follows in its wake. The latest manifestation of this growing frustration is a Facebook petition with a mission "to stop Mayor Daley from the further selling of Chicago assets, and further mortgaging Chicago's fiscal future." There is also an accompanying Facebook group titled "Stop Mayor Daley From Selling Chicago." Both were created relatively recently, so if you're a Facebook user and you believe in this cause, head over and sign up.
