At this point, every statement coming out of Roland Burris' mouth only gets him in more trouble. Case in point: here are his brief remarks to reporters today:
This is the statement that caught my ear:
BURRIS: When we got the transcript it was determined that I had said yes in the transcript to all those names, but we had not addressed all those names. So that's what prompted me to file a seperate affidavit that would show who we talked to and what was said.
Now here's GOP Rep. Jim Durkin's question during the January 8 hearing that included "all those names" referenced by Burris above:
DURKIN: Did you talk to any members of the Governor's staff or anyone closely related to the Governor, including family members or any lobbyists connected with him, including let me throw out some names, John Harris, Rob Blagojevich, Doug Scofield, Bob Greenlee, Lon Monk, John Wyma, did you talk to anybody who was associated with the Governor about your desire to seek the appointment prior to the Governor's arrest?
BURRIS: I talked to some friends about my desire to be appointed, yes.
Burris' latest affidavit details conversations with Harris, Rob Blagojevich, Scofield, and Wyma (in addition to Monk, who he mentioned in the original hearing). But what about Greenlee? If Burris' "yes" is really to be interpreted as a blanket confirmation that he'd talked to all of the individuals mentioned by Durkin, doesn't that mean he talked to Greenlee as well? Should we be expecting a fourth affidavit?
Probably not. But it just goes to show you how the degree of parsing being exhibited by Burris can cause more trouble than it's worth.
