Clyburn Weighs In On Burris

Racializing the calls for Roland Burris' resignation is just about the only option his advisers have left.  Delmarie Cobb made that clear in Carol Marin's Sun-Times column this morning:

Racializing the calls for Roland Burris' resignation is just about the only option his advisers have left.  Delmarie Cobb made that clear in Carol Marin's Sun-Times column this morning:

[S]he argues ... he's being savaged by his own party after an unblemished career.

"The only things the media could find on him was that his children were named Roland, there was a mausoleum and he had a big ego. There wasn't any dirt," Cobb said.

Now, Cobb says, Burris' enemies are trying to bloody him up and weaken him with mounting legal bills.

"And then it won't be called racism," said Cobb.

Well, there clearly was dirt.  It's just that Burris conveniently forgot to disclose it to the Illinois House impeachment committee as well as the Senate Democratic leadership.

Hopefully, Cobb's efforts will be dampened by these kind of statements:

Rep. Jim Clyburn, the highest-ranking African-American member of the House, says Sen. Roland Burris (D-Ill.) should give up the thought of running for election and should leave the Senate quietly when his term ends after the 2010 elections.

“I probably see a lot of reasons for him to call this two-year stint a career in the Senate,” said Clyburn, the House majority whip. “I think if I were in his place I wouldn’t [run].”
