Just got an intriguing tip about a series of nationwide, simultaneous rallies being planned for April 11. The "New Way Forward" demonstrations will call for nationalizing, reorganizing, and decentralizing insolvent banks. The action isn't sponsored by any particular group; rather, this website is serving as the organizing force. And the argument found there is a pretty convincing one:
On April 11, 2009, people will come out in cities across the country to protest the economic idealogues who protect profits for a few over what's good for the country. Our country wants a new way forward, a break towards policies that put the public's well-being first. Let's show Obama that progressive ideas are politically viable.
NATIONALIZE: Experts agree -- Insolvent banks that are too big to fail must incur a temporary FDIC intervention - no more taxpayer handouts.
REORGANIZE: Current CEOs and board members must be removed and bonuses wiped out. The financial elite must share in the cost of what they have caused.
DECENTRALIZE: Banks must be broken up and sold back to the private market with new antitrust rules in place-- new banks, managed by new people.
You can read more about "the idea" here. Rallies have been officially announced in six cities, while Chicago is apparently still in the planning phases. We'll let you know if we get more details.
