If anyone is going to hold the Bush administration accountable for its authorization of torture, it's going to be Rep. Jan Schakowsky. As we mentioned earlier today, Schakowsky -- chair of the House Intelligence Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations -- has asked her staff to begin an investigation into the damning Office of Legal Counsel memos if the full committee opts not to launch a probe of its own. On the Huffington Post today, she also penned a stinging rebuttal to a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed by CIA Director Michael Hayden and former Attorney General Michael Mukasey, in which they decried the release of the memos. And today, according to Think Progress, the North Shore congresswoman said she would support impeachment hearings against Jay Bybee, a federal judge who authored the legal documents:

I would support impeachment hearings for Judge Bybee. ... We’ve already seen that he’s willing to interpret the laws in ways that are counter to the fundamental values of our country. I think that is a proper response.

Schakowsky may get her wish. President Obama said today he is not opposed to a bipartisan investigation into the Bush administration officials who devised the tactics.
