Layoffs And Uncertainty At Illinois DCFS

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services postponed 375 layoffs that the agency was scheduled to make this week, citing a delay in the administrative process. But cutbacks at DCFS are well under way.

Lawmakers, Advocates Make Human Rights Case To Close Tamms

With the fate of Tamms supermax prison at an impasse, those who support its closure made the case today that the facility must shut down on human rights grounds.

Advocates with the Tamms Year Ten coalition spoke grimly of the 23-hour daily solitary confinement experienced by inmates who are fed through slots in cell doors and often deal with sensory deprivation. Speakers noted that both Amnesty International and the ACLU condemn the prison for violating international human rights agreements.

“This is a moral issue,” declared U.S. Rep. Danny Davis (D-Chicago). Read more »

Lawsuit To Halt Prison Closings Will Be Heard Tomorrow

A hearing is set for 9 a.m. tomorrow in an Alexander County courthouse on a lawsuit filed by the AFSCME Council 31 public employees union as a means to stop corrections and juvenile justice facility closings ordered by Gov. Pat Quinn. It is not known if Illinois Circuit Court Judge Charles Cavaness will issue a ruling tomorrow as well.

Couples Named In Illinois Gay Marriage Lawsuit To March In Chicago's Pride Parade

As Chicago's Gay Pride weekend kicks off, Progress Illinois talks to some of the 25 couples that recently filed suit, along with Lambda Legal and ACLU, to challenge the constitutionality of an Illinois law that denies gay and lesbian couples the freedom to marry.
