Some Chicago City Council members want the city to provide more information about what projects will be funded from an "Infrastructure Trust" proposed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
By the end of next week, former congresswoman Debbie Halvorson will make her intentions known when it comes to whether she'll run against Jesse Jackson Jr. in the 2nd congressional district.
As many as 200 police officers will join the ranks of the Chicago Police
Department next year, in addition to the class of 120 officers that
began their training on September 1, the Sun-Timesreports this morning. The money for the officers will be included in outgoing Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's last budget. But
it's still unclear whether the hires will ultimately mean more police
on the street, given attrition within the department. "You probably
have a couple hundred people retiring. It's not gonna be a net gain,"
said Ald. Anthony Beale (9th Ward), the chair of the City Council's
police committee.
Chicago's 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale wants to get rid of the requirement
that city police officer applicants must have completed at least two
years of college as a way to "level the playing field" for minorities
and increase diversity.
Chicago Ald. Anthony Beale (9th Ward), the lead promoter of a major
South Side development project that includes a new Walmart store, told the Reader yesterday that he would not use a parliamentary maneuver to skip the Zoning Committee (where a vote has been delayed twice) and bring the proposal before the full City Council today. To bypass the committee -- a move supported by Mayor Daley -- two-thirds of the council would have to agree to the rare maneuver.
On their 9 p.m. broadcast yesterday, Fox Chicago interviewed Ald. Anthony Beale about his fight to get City Council approval for a Walmart in the 9th Ward. During the segment, Beale said: "Everyone has turned their back on us. All the other groceries have said they don't want to come into the area. But we have a Super Walmart wanting to plug the hole." It should be noted that in blog post last week, the Reader's Hunter Clauss questioned Beale's recurring claim:
Beale said he worked with union leaders to try and interest
Jewel-Osco, Dominick’s, Target, Costco, and Ikea so it didn’t have to
rely on Walmart.
But representatives for several of those retailers told me they were
never approached by Beale, the site’s developer, or anyone else about
opening a new store in Pullman.
Walmart officials held a face-to-face meeting with organized labor last night about a proposed expansion in Chicago, but participants refused to comment on the discussion.
Mayor Richard Daley chose Ald. Anthony Beale (9th Ward) to head the City Council's Police and Fire Committee. Beale will take the place of ex-Ald. Isaac Carothers, who resigned in February after pleading guilty to bribery charges related to city zoning.
