Protesters On Both Sides Of Marriage Equality Issue Converge At Rep. Sandack's Office (VIDEO)

State Rep. Ron Sandack (R-Downers Grove), one of two Republicans in the Illinois House to publicly express support for same-sex marriage, defended his position Saturday in front of rival organizations demonstrating outside his office.

Activist groups from both sides of the issue gathered to condemn or cheer on Sandack, who in February declared his support for the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, SB 10.

Ravitch Says CTU Strike Was Galvanizing Moment For Teachers

Diane Ravitch, who was assistant secretary of education under George H.W. Bush and then became a national spokeswoman against the so-called education reform movement, says that Chicago has taken the lead on education reform – and the revolt against such policies.

Now a professor at New York University, Ravitch told reporters at the Chicago Teachers Union headquarters Monday that the strike gave “vicarious exhilaration” to teachers across the nation that were “beaten down” by evaluations based on standardized tests and charter schools.

Ravitch says Chicago is distinctive on education issues because of a “more militant” teachers' union, noting that in much of the south, west and now to an extent in northern states such as Wisconsin, “Teacher collective bargaining rights are eliminated.” Read more »

Community Advocates See CTU Strike As Opportunity To Highlight National Education Issues

Advocacy groups across Chicago mobilized today in support of the Chicago Teachers Union strike, setting up “freedom camps” and scheduling events for the next two weeks including a “freedom ride” to Washington, D.C.

The advocates' approach to the strike contrasts the argument being made by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. While Emanuel frames the strike as a matter of just two outstanding issues, advocates seek to elevate the dispute to a national referendum on urban education policy.

“This labor fight is much bigger than bread and butter issues for teachers,” says Amisha Patel, executive director of the Grassroots Collaborative. According to Patel, the strike is about whether CTU can halt “corporate control over schools”, saying that the business-focused approach to school reform has been going on at least since former Chicago mayor Richard Daley unveiled the pro-charter school “Renaissance 2010” program in 2004. Disability Advocates To Boycott Hotels Over Equal Access Rights

In what has been described by disability-rights advocates as nothing short of a fight over equal access rights, a coalition of organizations unveiled plans Wednesday to boycott some of the nation’s leading hotels over their efforts to delay the enforcement of federal guidelines requiring the installation of permanent wheelchair lifts that allow disabled guests entry to swimming pools.

At issue has been debate over specific guidelines set forth in 2010 as part of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regarding access to pools for people with disabilities. This past January, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) revised those standards, requiring a number of hotels by March 15 to install pool lifts that were permanently “fixed” next to a pool at all times. The deadline, however, was subsequently extended to May 21 — due in large part to an extensive lobbying campaign by industry trade organizations.

Urban Education Activists Take Complaints To Obama Administration (VIDEO)

The Kenwood Oakland community organization on Chicago’s South Side joined with education activists across the country at a press conference yesterday in downtown Chicago to contend that so-called education reform policies violate their civil rights by marginalizing the voices of minority parents and students.

Plaintiffs from Boston, Chicago, Detroit, New York, Washington, D.C. as well as Wichita, Kansas and Eureka, Mississippi announced that they plan to file seven separate complaints with the U.S. Department of Education stating that their respective city’s education policies violate the Civil Rights Act.

“Since we pay taxes we should have the right to have input in these schools,” said Jitu Brown, an organizer with Kenwood Oakland. “The common denominator in all these city policies is that we don’t.” Read more »
