Berrios: "You'll Have More Information Than In The Past"

For those hoping Cook County Assessor-elect Joe Berrios will uphold his campaign promises to make the property assessment process more transparent and fair, the election night quote he delivered to the Chicago News Cooperative is a bit discouraging:

"To me it was all a bunch of bunk," Berrios told the Chicago News Cooperative, when asked about the persistent criticism of cronyism that has dogged his campaign. He vowed greater transparency, but set a vague standard for it, saying that from day one "you will see more information than you have in the past" out of the office.

On his campaign website, Berrios said this his office would ensure "assessment notices can be read with clarity." He even posted a sample notice (PDF) that he thinks is an improvement over the current paperwork sent out to homeowners each year. But saying only that "more information" will be made available is a pretty low bar to set, especially when accusations of corruption dominated the campaign. It'd be nice to see our new Assessor make some concrete proposals in the coming months.

Assessor Candidates Target Black Voters

The fight to succeed James Houlihan as Cook County Assessor has been a bitter one. With just two weeks until the election, both Democratic nominee Joe Berrios and Independent candidate Forrest Claypool are bolstering their outreach to black voters across the county.

After announcing an endorsement from several African American elected officials last week, WBEZ reports that Berrios is expected to unveil an ad created for black stations. Not to be outdone, Claypool spoke at the House of Hope, a mega-church on Chicago's far South Side, yesterday morning. He's also launching radio advertising on black stations and will soon release a robocall featuring U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. To top it off, the campaign announced it had received the endorsement of Ald. Ed Smith (28th Ward), who called Claypool "a friend" and "fine public servant."

"Attached At The Checkbook"

Got a chuckle out of this line from Jim Warren's new column on the Cook County assessor's race:

As I’ve previously disclosed, scientists believe Mr. [Joe] Berrios and Mr. [Michael] Madigan are the first pair of Hispanic-Irish conjoined twins attached at the checkbook. Their self-interests are seamless.

You can learn more about the race -- and the cozy relationship between Berrios and Speaker Madigan -- here.
