Nurses To Challenge City Protest Permit Denial

National Nurses United members said today that they plan to file a legal challenge with the city of Chicago, after the city told them to change their rally destination for a Friday, May 18 protest, prior to Chicago hosting the NATO summit May 20 and 21.

NATO Summit Protesters Get Conditional Permit

After a drawn out battle, a coalition of protesters is poised to get a legal permit from the city to march against the NATO summit on May 20.

Joe Iosbaker, an organizer at the Coalition Against NATO/G8 War & Poverty Agenda, or CANG8, says that the Chicago Department of Transportation has conditionally agreed to a proposal by CANG8 to start a march May 20 at the Petrillo Band Shell in Grant Park and end at the McCormick Place convention center, the site of the two-day NATO summit. Judge Rejects NATO Protest Permit Appeal

Writing “what a difference a day makes” in his decision, Chicago Administrative Law Judge Raymond Prosser rejected the May 20 parade permit route proposed by the Coalition Against the NATO and G8 War and Poverty Agenda, or CANG8, for the first day of the NATO summit.

The city had before approved an identical protest route for May 19 – when the G8 summit was first supposed to meet, prior to it being relocated to Camp David. Read more »

G8 Moves, But Summit Ordinances Stay

Chicago is sorting through the stunning White House announcement Monday that Camp David, not McCormick Place Convention Center, will play host to the Group of Eight summit May 19-21, after months of hype and build up.

One lingering question – which Progress Illinois looked at yesterday – is if World Business Chicago, the non-profit in charge of managing both the G8 and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summits, will redirect their fundraising efforts now that just NATO is coming to town.

Another concern: What becomes of two controversial ordinances that passed City Council in January, in anticipation of the simultaneous summits? According to Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office, both measures are still in effect. Read more »
