Town Hall Meeting Illustrates Lack Of Communication With Taxpayers On TIF Projects

Taxpayers are largely kept out of the loop when it comes to how their property taxes are used by tax increment finance (TIF) districts, according to Tom Tresser, co-founder of the Civic Lab.

Aiming to promote transparency in government and give residents background information on neighborhood TIF projects, the Civic Lab and the TIF Ad Hoc Committee of the Washington Park Community hosted a town hall meeting at the Washington Park Field House Saturday.<--break->

Anti-Fracking Protesters March On Statehouse, Madigan Supports Moratorium

More than 100 protesters descended on the Illinois Statehouse in Springfield yesterday to rally against a regulatory bill and call for a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing in Illinois.

Opponents to hydraulic fracturing say it has a negative environmental impact, including extreme water and air pollution. Demonstrators yesterday spoke with legislators and passed petitions that urged lawmakers to support a two-year moratorium on fracking in Illinois.

Legislators, Healthcare Advocates Celebrate Medicaid Anniversary, Rail Against State Cuts (VIDEO)

The backlash continues against Gov. Pat Quinn’s recent $1.6 billion cut to Medicaid.

On Monday, which marked the 47th anniversary of the state- and federally-funded medical services program, about 100 healthcare advocates joined in a rally that included U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston), State Rep. Esther Golar (D-Chicago), and State Sen. Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago).
