The CTA has started to eliminate hundreds of outside "L" and
subway guard employees and replace them with its own part-time and full-time
customer-service workers.
Users of Chicago’s public transportation system will have an
additional option for their commute come June, as the city prepares to
debut a massive bicycle-rental sharing program.
Three-speed bikes
painted “Chicago blue” will soon be available at docking stations across
the city for a $7 daily pass or yearly membership of $75.
“This is really a big deal,” said Ron Burke, executive director of Active Transportation Alliance. “It’s going to give tens of thousands of Chicagoans every day more transportation options.”
Thirteen different fees associated with the debit portion of the
two-in-one Ventra card that would allow people to load it with CTA
transit funds and also use it for purchasing other goods was posted on the company's website Monday.
The Chicago Transit Authority announced a proposal to discontinue at least 12 bus routes. Another 14 more that could face discontinuation or reduced service under the plan.
The massive federal bill that outlines spending for both highway and
public transit projects finally cleared Congress Friday. Local transit
officials are happy, though some national observers are a bit more
skeptical.
“This is a step forward and gives us a little
stability,” Joseph Costello, executive director of the Regional
Transportation Authority (RTA) told Progress Illinois.
According
to Costello, the bill provides a feasible way for RTA to get additional
federal money for projects such as the long overdue extension of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Red Line. CTA is under the umbrella of RTA, which also is in charge of the region's suburban trains and buses. Read more »
