Down For The Day, Chicago Board Of Election Site Back Up

The Chicago Board of Elections Web site was down for the majority of today amid some confusion about what polling places voters should cast their ballot.

The Web site was back up as of 5 p.m., or two hours prior to polls closing. Read more »

Illinois Republicans Rake In Super PAC Cash, Dark Money

If tomorrow’s six extremely close (see recent polls here and our voter guide here) Illinois congressional races were solely determined by outside spending, that is money poured into the races that the candidates themselves did not raise, the Republican candidates would win by a landslide.

In the 8th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 17th district Congressional races, Republicans are getting millions of dollars more from Super Political Action Committees and “dark money” groups. Read more »

Report Gives Qualified Praise For Illinois Campaign Finance Laws

Illinois is synonymous with political corruption, but a new study gives hope to the Land of Lincoln. Illinois has the seventh strongest campaign finance laws in the country, according to a report released yesterday by the Center for Public Integrity, a Washington, D.C. government watchdog.

As with a CPI study Progress Illinois examined in February on overall public corruption by state, the campaign finance report is not concerned with past shenanigans but current law, and Illinois ranks well on both citizen access to financial records, and decently on rules placed on the financing of political parties and individual candidates. Jackson Jr. Uses Victory Speech To Talk Airports (VIDEO)

Seventeen-year 2nd Congressional District Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. convincingly fended off his most difficult primary challenge ever today against former congresswoman Debbie Halvorson – Jackson is ahead 71% to 28% with 99% of precincts reporting.

Jackson used his victory speech to push one of his long-time projects, a Peotone airport.
