Community Activists Take On CPS, School Closings

The agenda of Chicago Public Schools Chief Education Officer Jean-Claude Brizard and Mayor Rahm Emanuel is arguably a sped up version of the Daley administration’s education policy: more confrontation with the teachers union (on matters like the longer school day) and promotion of alternatives to neighborhood public schools, like charters.

How this citywide agenda impacts discrete communities will be better understood December 1 when CPS releases schools they plan to close due to poor performance. In anticipation, a group of community organizations released their own agenda – A neighborhood’s agenda for schools – at a press conference Tuesday at the Logan Square Neighborhood Association headquarters.

Emanuel’s Budget Bad For Libraries, Public Health – And Even Police

Rahm Emanuel stressed last week that his 2012 city budget proposal is an “honest” document unlike those budgets drawn up by former mayor Richard Daley. But the real problem may be that the city doesn’t have the money it needs.

Skepticism Surrounds Chicago's New Recycling Plan

Recycling advocates in the city of Chicago have been dismayed for years, but skepticism is now widespread when it comes to Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s trial plan that involves partly privatizing the service.

This week, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced a plan to divvy up the city’s six areas. The city’s own Streets and Sanitation department will pick up curb-side recycling bins on the North and Southwest sides of the city, while Metal Management Midwest takes on the South Side. Waste Management will service the remaining areas and will also tackle an additional 22,000 homes in the Wicker Park, Bucktown, and Logan Square neighborhoods.
