Fellow 2nd Congressional District Candidates Have Strong Words For Robin Kelly

Fellow candidates in the race to fill the vacant seat in Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District had strong words for Democratic nominee Robin Kelly today, as the polls opened at 6 a.m. and voters are poised to cast their ballots throughout the day.

Republican candidate Paul McKinley called Kelly “insignificant.” Green Party candidate, LeAlan Jones, said she was a “puppet.” Independent candidate, Elizabeth Pahlke, questioned Kelly’s New York roots and suggested the people need a Chicago-native. Marcus Lewis, another Independent candidate, said voting in favor of Kelly was “essentially giving away your vote to an outside billionaire.”

2nd Congressional District Candidates Offer Their Solutions To Neighborhood Violence At NAACP Forum

Until urban communities become accountable for their children and actions, gun violence is always going to be hot in Chicago, said LeAlan Jones, one of the six candidates on Tuesday’s ballot in the race to fill Jesse Jackson Jr.’s empty seat in Congress.

Green Party candidate Jones lives in the South Shore neighborhood. He said he often sees children walking to school alone in the morning.

“How is it that momma can’t wake up or daddy can’t wake up to go with their kid to school, and they don’t even have a job,” Jones said at last night’s 2nd congressional district election forum sponsored by the Chicago South Side and Far South Suburban chapters of the NAACP. Read more »

Halvorson Calls For Unity While Conceding In 2nd Congressional District Race

For the second time in less than a year, Democratic candidate Debbie Halvorson lost the chance to win Jesse Jackson Jr.’s former 2nd congressional district seat in today’s special election primary.

Robin Kelly won the Democratic slot to run in the district’s April 9 general election to replace Jackson Jr., who pled guilty last week to misusing some $750,000 in campaign funds.

“This is a big night for Robin,” former congresswoman Halvorson said in her concession speech at Homewood’s Balagio Restaurant.

“We’ve all been through a lot, and like good Democrats we’re all family, and we fight a lot, but at the end of the day we have to move on because things are bigger than us.”

Calumet City Residents Say Gun Control Was Key Decider In Vote (VIDEO)

For many voters in the south suburban areas of the 2nd Congressional District, Tuesday’s special election to replace former congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. was a chance to express their desire for “change”, despite admitting to having a guarded optimism over anyone who eventually wins the seat.

“I feel like new people do not have the connections, they do not owe anybody,” said Calumet City resident Karen Fields, who voted for former state Rep. Robin Kelly. “They have nothing to gain by not being themselves - they can come into office and make a change.”

Halvorson, Steger Residents Blast Bloomberg SuperPAC Money On Election Day (VIDEO)

Freezing rain began to slick over the sidewalks this morning just as Democratic candidate for the 2nd congressional district Debbie Halvorson voted at the Steger Community Center.

Former congresswoman Halvorson is one of 18 candidates running in the special primary election today to replace Jesse Jackson Jr., who pled guilty last week to misusing campaign funds.

“The 2nd congressional district has been plagued for a long time with ethical problems, with corruption, and we have a chance to really close that chapter and start fresh,” Halvorson said just after casting her ballot.
