Walmart Quietly Gaining In Chicago, But Faces Neighborhood Resistance

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and First Lady Michelle Obama announced Tuesday a plan to combat “food deserts” with four grocery chains opening 17 stores in Chicago neighborhoods bereft of fresh food. But little attention was paid to the fact that one of these “grocery chains” is discount store Walmart. The world’s largest corporation has also added – or plans to add – stores in decidedly non-food desert locales like the West Loop, Lakeview, and River North.

As Walmart Expands In Chicago, National Movement To Boycott Takes Aim

Chicago's Chatham neighborhood has the distinction of being the place where the first Walmart Express opened in the U.S. Mayor Rahm Emanuel visited the 10,000 square-foot store, located at 83rd St. and Steward Ave. to see how the store was fairing on its first day in business, with his office releasing the following statement: "Increasing access to fresh, healthy foods in underserved neighborhoods throughout Chicago is an important priority for the Emanuel Administration."

Meanwhile, unions leaders and advocacy groups are calling on Chicagoans to keep a watchful eye over the treatment of workers at the establishment.

WalMart Planning Second Chicago North Side Store

WalMart has signed a lease for a second store in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood. The more than 14,000 square-foot property is only five blocks away from Wrigley Field, so the convenience store-sized WalMart Express that is planned will be joining an already saturated market considering the nearby Walgreens, CVS, 7-Eleven, Whole Foods, and Jewel. The new establishment will be located just a mile north of the first highly-contested Lakeview WalMart Market, which is just about the same distance between the planned Express store and a new Target store to the north.

This time around, WalMart's infiltration into the area had been quiet, so much so that Alderman James Cappleman (46th) says he only heard about the plan last week from residents -- not the retailer, which he finds to be a bit problematic. Read more »

IL Walmart Warehouse Workers File Suit Alleging Unfair Practices (VIDEO)

Employees staffed by Simos Insourcing Solutions filed suit in the Will County Circuit Court today alleging that they were denied benefits promised to them when they were originally hired to work at the Walmart warehouse located in Elwood, Illinois. This is the second time a suit has been filed by workers at this particular warehouse in as many months.

“Simos promised me that I would earn vacation pay while I worked there, but apparently that was an empty promise,” said Willie Jones, one of the lead plaintiffs, in a press release announcing the suit. Read more »

Number Of The Day: 33,395 Square Feet

That is the number that a proposed WalMart store is now limited to in it’s quest to move into the resistant and business-saturated neighborhood of Lakeview. The space limitation to 33,395 square feet is part of the “restrictive covenant” that the South East Lake View Neighbors Association (SELVN) presented at a meeting Monday night. WalMart and 44th Ward Ald. Tom Tunney have agreed to it, which now means the retail giant can be sued if it violates by expanding.

Why Does WalMart Want In On Lakeview?

In the business-saturated neighborhood of Lakeview, there is an overwhelming 70 percent resistance to a WalMart expansion. The popular North Side neighborhood not only birthed Boystown, but half of the residents are young women -- two groups the corporation has notoriously mistreated. So why does WalMart want in?

South Side Walmart Moves Forward, North Side Store Faces Questions

Walmart, long-establised in the nation's suburbs and rural areas, continues to press ahead with its plans to make Chicago its model of urban expansion. The Arkansas-based retail behemoth is moving forward with plans for a long-anticipated supercenter on the city's South Side, and talking with residents in a posh North Side neighborhood about opening a smaller market in Lakeview.
