Education Activists Trek To Springfield To Lobby For Moratorium On School Closings (VIDEO)

Education activists headed to Springfield early Wednesday morning to lobby for a moratorium on school closings. Their campaign for legislative action comes on the same day as the Chicago Board of Education votes on a proposal to close a record-breaking number of public schools in Chicago. Meanwhile, the Illinois General Assembly has less than one month left in the spring session, which ends May 31.

“We’re going to put pressure on state legislators,” said Hueron Wilks, a senior staff member of Action Now and one of Wednesday’s trip organizers. “Our representatives have failed their constituents, they could have done something about these school closings a long time ago.”

Unite Here Workers Oppose Pritzker Nomination For Commerce Secretary

Senate confirmation hearings for Chicago billionaire Penny Pritzker’s nomination for U.S. Secretary of Commerce are scheduled for Thursday, but workers from the her family-owned hotel chain are already voicing their opposition to the selection.

“This is not somebody we want in Washington; this is a lady whose business model hurts workers,” said Demetrius Jackson, 25, a lifelong Chicagoan and convention service houseman at the Hyatt Regency Chicago for six years.

Philadelphia Community Group Stands With Chicago Activists Against School Closures (VIDEO)

Parents and community groups from Chicago and Philadelphia stood in solidarity against school closings at a gathering outside the Chicago Board of Education’s headquarters Tuesday morning. The activists also blasted the national trend of privatizing education.

“There’s another agenda going on in this city and throughout this country, and that’s the agenda of private business corporations taking over the schools,” said Shannon Bennett with the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization (KOCO).  “But the community and the people have spoken, and we’re going to continue to do our due diligence, to do the work that we have to do, to dismantle this system.”

Protesters Wrap Around City Hall Demanding A Stop To Chicago School Closings (VIDEO)

Three days of marches from across the city and countless acts of civil disobedience culminated on the steps of City Hall Monday, as more than 500 protesters called on Mayor Rahm Emanuel to stop closing Chicago’s neighborhood schools.

A few hundred education activists kicked off the last day of the Chicago Teachers Union's three-day march against school closings at William J. & Charles H. Mayo Elementary School Monday morning. Education activists also delivered a petition calling for a moratorium on school closings to City Hall this afternoon. Progress Illinois was there for the actions.
