Call For Legislative Help In Fighting CPS School Closures Rings Loud At Congressional Forum (VIDEO)

The proposal to close 54 schools across the Chicago Public Schools system is unsafe and will destabilize communities already hit hard by the economic depression, according to speakers at a Congressional Forum hosted by U.S. Reps. Bobby Rush (D, IL-1) and Danny Davis (D, IL-7) over the weekend.

Bustos Introduces Legislation Aimed At Boosting Job Creation, Regulating Federal Contracts

A new House bill would make job creation an important element in contract bids for the federal government.

The legislation, called the American Jobs Matter Act, HR 1332, would require companies to include a “jobs impact statement” in their proposal for contract bids. The statement tells the government the number of jobs that will be created by the company and its subcontractors.

The legislation also requires companies to guarantee that jobs will not be moved outside of the U.S. once the contract has been awarded.

“America, specifically our region of America, has the best workers in the world,” said U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos (D, IL-17), sponsor of the legislation, on a conference call. “We should take advantage of their skills and craftsmanship.”

Duckworth Discusses Concerns About Cuts To Social Security, Medicare With Elgin Residents

Residents of the 8th congressional district are terrified that their Social Security and Medicare benefits are going to be cut, U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D, IL-8) said after an hourlong meet and greet with constituents in Elgin this weekend.

“They’re barely making ends meet,” Duckworth told Progress Illinois at her third Congress at Your Corner event, held at the Gail Borden Library. “Whatever we do to balance our nation’s budget, it cannot be on the backs of these people.” Read more »
