Four Arrested In Ongoing Fight For South Side Trauma Center

Four people were arrested Sunday in the ongoing battle for a trauma center on Chicago's South Side. When 50 people entered the University of Chicago's new hospital building stating that they were protesting the lack of a trauma center, university police quickly began manhandling the protesters and pushing them out with their batons, according to reports. The protest, which is planned as a sit-in that would have had only five activists remaining in the buidling, turned into a free for all that resulted in four people being arrested by Chicago police.

Occupy Chicago Outlines NATO Protests (VIDEO)

Occupy Chicago says thousands of protesters will go to Chicago next week before the city hosts the NATO summit, May 20 and 21. While Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel views the summit as raising Chicago’s profile, Occupy thinks the event will call attention to their concerns and invigorate the Occupy Wall Street movement that started last fall.

Nurses To Challenge City Protest Permit Denial

National Nurses United members said today that they plan to file a legal challenge with the city of Chicago, after the city told them to change their rally destination for a Friday, May 18 protest, prior to Chicago hosting the NATO summit May 20 and 21.

“We are prepared to seek injunctive relief in federal court,” said Jan Rodolfo (right in photo), the Midwest director of National Nurses United at a press conference outside City Hall. Read more »

Many Unknowns, Police Say, For NATO/G8 Summits

Chicago Police Department leadership has pretty broad guesses about what security will be needed for the NATO and G8 summits, how many people will come in to Chicago to attend the summits, and who might be arrested for protesting the summit.

“This is a federal, White House event and we don’t have a lot of information at this time,” said Debra Kirby, the police department’s chief of international relations in response to questions posed by Ald. Ed Burke (14th) at a city council Budget and Government Operations committee hearing today. The NATO and G8 summits will be held at McCormick Place more or less simultaneously, May 19-21.

“Frankly, it leaves a lot of unknown questions at this time,” she added.
