Number Of The Week: 409,000

That is the number of applications for unemployment benefits that were filed last week, ending May 14, marking the second week of sharp drops. In the week ending May 7, these initial jobless claims were at 438,000.

Economists initially predicted that jobless claims for last week would reach about 420,000, but now believe the number will dip below 400,000 next week. The relatively more optimistic numbers moves the number of jobless claims back to where they were a month ago.

Unemployment Becoming A Black Or White Issue

Recent numbers showing unemployment down got many talking about recovery, but we’re learning the reality isn’t “one size fits all.” While the Bureau of Labor Statistics touted an 8.8 percent unemployment rate in March, the number of whites who are unemployed is even lower at 7.9 percent, while black unemployment was almost double that and actually increased to 15.5 percent. The numbers were released Friday, just one day after the National Urban League released “The State of Black America” report that identified “the economy as the leading area of disparity between black and whites.”

Unemployment Down, CEO Salaries Up, And Many Still Struggle

The economy added more jobs than expected in March, but many continue to struggle. People like Albaro Tellez, who has lived in Chicago for 26 years but drives over a thousand miles in his van for whatever contract work he can find. He was laid off from his non-union plumbing job in June 2008, when The Great Recession began. Sure the jobs market may look optimistic with the March numbers, but at the current pace the nation won't return to the 5 percent unemployment rate of early 2008 until 2018. In analyzing the numbers, Ezra Klein called the continued upswing, “not bad” but “not-bad is also not good enough.”

Unemployment Insurance Bill Moving Through The General Assembly

Legislation designed to ensure unemployment benefits keep flowing to tens of thousands of jobless Illinoisans is moving quickly through the General Assembly. The bill passed out of the State Senate Wednesday and moved unanimously out of the House Revenue and Finance Committee this morning. HB 1030 would extend the life of the state's Extended Benefit (EB) unemployment insurance program, said Greg Rivara, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

"No Priors" Hiring All Too Common

The National Employment Law Project estimates that nearly 3.9 million adults in Illinois have a criminal record, excluding them from jobs and employment.
