During oral arguments today over the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, the Supreme Court hinted that it might be willing to strike down the 1996 law that prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages, even in states that recognize it, according to the New York Times.

After 80 minutes of oral arguments today on whether to let California’s controversial ban on same-sex marriage, Proposition 8, stand, members of the U.S. Supreme Court gave little inclination as to which direction they will head.

This evening, gay rights activists are rallying in downtown Chicago calling for marriage equality.
