African-American faith-based leaders from across Illinois called on state legislators to increase Illinois’ minimum wage to $10.65 an hour at a press conference in Chicago Wednesday.

The leaders urged their elected officials to support Senate Bill 68, which would gradually increase the minimum wage until it reaches $10.65 and go up with the cost of living each year thereafter.

The group also encouraged members of The Chicago Club to support economic policies that would advance immigrants in the job sector.

“We as a nation must work harder to attract and retain immigrant talent and avoid wasting the potential of the immigrants already here,” the report reads. “Our problem: the nation’s broken immigration system is holding back the region’s economic growth and clouding its future.”
