Local Advocacy Groups Call For Restoration Of State Homeless Student Education Funds

Given the potential record-breaking number of schools closing in Chicago and a recent report showing an increased number of homeless students in Illinois, anti-homeless advocates say it’s more important than ever for the state to restore funding for the education of students with unstable homes.

More than 7,000 protesters descended upon downtown Chicago today in protest of school closures and related actions by the Chicago Public Schools system. Progress Illinois was there for the action.

CPS High School Students Protest Impending School Actions (VIDEO)

On the first day of spring break, a group of approximately 20 high school students marched to City Hall to deliver a letter to Mayor Rahm Emanuel today, announcing their opposition to last week’s announcement from Chicago Public Schools (CPS) that 54 schools will be closed and another six are slated for turnaround.

“All CPS students are victims of this bad policy, because CPS is not listening to student voices,” said Israel Munoz, a senior at Thomas Kelly High School in Chicago’s West Side neighborhood of Brighton Park. “Shutting down public education anywhere in the city makes victims of students everywhere in the city.”

Education Advocates, Parents & Teachers Fight Back Against CPS School Actions

About a dozen Parents 4 Teachers members braved the bitter cold late this afternoon outside City Hall to protest the Chicago Public Schools’ announcement yesterday that it would shutter 54 schools and turnaround another six, impacting about 30,000 students. Progress Illinois was there for the "Banner Day" event.
