Cuts To High-Speed Rail In Federal Budget Deal Hurt Illinois Projects

Lame Duck Council Scheduled To Take Up Important Ordinances This Week

Voters in 14 Chicago wards will cast their ballots and complete (barring allegations of improprieties and protracted legal battles), the next City Council. But that group -- and Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel -- won't be inaugurated until May 16. In the meantime, the current group of aldermen, a number of them already lame ducks, are scheduled to consider at least three ordinances we've been tracking here at Progress Illinois just days after tomorrow's run-off election. Pols Announce $685 Million For High-Speed Rail (VIDEO)

Starting in 2014, Cubs fans can bring a little Wrigleyville to St. Louis -- at least that’s what Gov. Quinn insisted at a press conference to announce a $685 million agreement to begin construction on the next phase of the a rail project connecting the two major Midwest cities that will help Chicago move toward becoming the epicenter of high speed rail service in the country. And although it was held at an Amtrak railyard in Chicago Tuesday, you’d think it was at a sports bar considering all the references to sports rivalries between the two cities.

Illinois Has 2,239 Structurally Deficient Bridges (VIDEO)

Chicago's Western Avenue Overpass, which crosses busy Belmont and Clybourn avenues on the city's Northwest Side, shares one crucial aspect with 2,238 other bridges in urban, suburban, and rural communities across the state: federal regulators consider it "structurally deficient," meaning at least one key component of the bridge is rated in poor shape or worse. You can see this easily at Western and Belmont. In many places, the overpass' concrete has chipped away, exposing its internal rebar to the elements.
