Chicago's 31st Ward Aldermanic Candidates Debate About Progressive Values, Campaign Funding

Aldermanic candidates for the 31st Ward, including incumbent Ald. Ray Suarez (31st), debated Wednesday night and discussed their platforms for next month's municipal election.

Those challenging Suarez, who was first elected alderman of the Northwest Side ward in 1991, include lawyer and professor Sean Starr, former reporter Milagros Santiago and Irma Cornier, a community outreach coordinator at NewLife 316.

More than 50 residents of the ward, which includes portions of the Belmont Cragin, Portage Park, Hermosa and Logan Square neighborhoods, attended the debate hosted by the Belmont-Cragin United community organization.

Gutierrez: Obama Administration 'Playing It Safe' On Immigration Reform (VIDEO)

U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D, IL-4) and immigrant rights activists on Monday blasted President Barack Obama’s decision to delay executive action on immigration reform until after the November elections.

Gutierrez accused Obama and his administration of “playing it safe.”

“Playing it safe means that ‘We’re going to abandon our values and abandon a community that we said we were going to support and defend,'” he said during a press conference Monday morning at Casa Michoacan in the city’s Pilsen neighborhood.

“Playing it safe, maybe it wins elections, maybe it loses elections, but playing it safe rarely leads to fairness, rarely leads to justice and almost never leads to good public policy which you can be proud of,” Gutierrez said.

Immigrant Rights Advocates Hold Mock Trial, Find Obama Guilty Of 'Needless Deportations' (VIDEO)

While immigration reform legislation has stalled in the U.S. House for a year, immigrant rights advocates hosted a mock trial in downtown Chicago Friday morning and found President Barack Obama “guilty” of “needless deportations.”

“My partner Wilson Gomez-Pu has been detained for 10 months on a 13-year-old order of deportation,” Josefa Gonzalez said, with translation services provided by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR).

Gomez-Pu, who has not been convicted of any violent crimes, was detained last August, said Gonzalez. He is the primary provider for their two children, ages seven and 11.

“My children and I need him home. These needless deportations are destroying our families, and our communities,” she said.
