Immigration Advocates Target Illinois Republicans As Bill Heads To GOP-Led House (VIDEO)

While the U.S. Senate was voting in favor of an immigration reform package that could provide a pathway to citizenship for America’s 11 million undocumented immigrants, supporters of the legislation were targeting Illinois Republican leaders at a rally in downtown Chicago Thursday.

More than 100 immigration reform advocates at Thursday’s rally vowed to apply pressure on U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (R, IL-6), who serves as the House chief deputy whip, and Illinois GOP Party Chairman Jack Dorgan, to demand their support of comprehensive immigration reform.

Passed by a 68-32 vote in the Senate Thursday, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act Of 2013, SB 744, now advances to the Republican-controlled U.S. House.

“It’s political suicide if they don’t support immigration reform,” said Yesenia Sanchez, executive director of the West Suburban Action Project (Proyecto de Accion de los Suburbios del Oeste, PASO). “It would not be a very smart decision to stand against this bill. The time is now for commonsense immigration reform and elections are coming up. Immigrants and their allies vote, too.”

As U.S. House Works On Immigration Reform Bill, Health Care Remains An Area Of Contention (VIDEO)

U.S. Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D, IL-4) said one of the most challenging aspects of comprehensive immigration reform is providing health care to America’s estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants, without spending taxpayer dollars.

“We have to figure out how to keep (undocumented immigrants) healthy, how to make sure they continue to get medical treatment and don’t become a charge [to taxpayers],” he said.

Durbin, Foster Discuss Immigration Reform's Economic Impact At Chamber Of Commerce Talk (VIDEO)

Comprehensive immigration reform is an important factor in America’s job creation and economic growth, according to U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Rep. Bill Foster (D, IL-11).

“I say to the workers in the United States today ... You are competing with an undocumented worker who goes to work and is paid less than a minimum wage ... They are able to undercut other workers in America just by virtue of the fact that they’re working under the counter,” said Durbin. “They’re all going to come up above the counter now, everybody will be held to the same legal standards.”

Pressure Against Joliet's Proposed For-Profit Immigrant Detention Center Escalates (VIDEO)

Pressure is mounting against a proposal to open a for-profit immigrant detention center in Joliet. Activists submitted 4,000 petitions against the facility to the Joliet City Council Thursday, just one day after four Illinois congressional delegates sent a letter asking the secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Janet Napolitano, to reject the prison’s proposal.

U.S. Reps. Mike Quigley (D, IL-5), Tammy Duckworth (D, IL-8)Brad Schneider (D, IL-10) and Bill Foster (D, IL-11) were behind the letter sent to Napolitano on Wednesday.

“Bringing an immigrant detention center to Joliet would mean overwhelming fear for this city’s immigrant community,” said Jesse Hoyt, an organizer with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR). “The pressure that’s on the city and the county to do something to stop this is getting much more intense.”

More than 250 advocates and immigrant workers, including approximately 60 members from the Latino Union of Chicago, met in Washington D.C. last week to make their voices heard by legislators and push for a moratorium on deportations while a deal on immigration reform is being hashed out.
