Jon Huntsman Says GOP Must Become More Progressive

Republican presidential primary candidate Jon Huntsman said it's time his party adopt a more progressive stance on a number of issues at the University of Chicago Thursday evening.

At the event, organized by the university’s Institute of Politics, the former Utah governor and U.S. ambassador to China under the Obama administration took questions from journalist and Fox News contributor Juan Williams as well as the audience. In his answers, Huntsman described himself as a solid Republican, but was strongly critical of the direction his party has taken, adding that its doubtful that the GOP will find electoral success in future elections if they do not change.

“The minute we start to divorce fact and science from our public policy debate, we are adrift,” Huntsman said. “If Republicans are going to succeed long-term, we have to be the party of reality.”

Pension Reform, Gay Marriage & Gun Control Rule Community Meeting With State Lawmakers (VIDEO)

Public frustrations over how Illinois’ elected leaders are addressing the state’s most pressing issues was shown in full display over the weekend as an informal meet-and-greet over coffee quickly led to some contentious moments between lawmakers and constituents.

Worries over the state’s pension system, gun control, marriage equality and the environment were all discussed at an event held by State Rep. Ann Williams (D-Chicago) Saturday. More than 50 people attended the discussion for a chance to ask questions of state Senate Pres. John Cullerton, as well as Williams and State Rep. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago). Some however used the opportunity of the forum to air their grievances at the three legislators about the way those problems are being handled.

Schneider Unseats Dold In the 10th Congressional District (VIDEO)

It’s been more than 30 years since a Democrat has held the 10th congressional seat in Illinois, but now it’s Brad Schneider’s turn.

Schneider, a business consultant from Deerfield, beat incumbent Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth).

During his victory speech, Schneider said he’s emerged from the campaign changed for the better, not because of the process, but because of the people in the 10th district.

“Together, we just made history,” he told the crowd of more than 200 supporters at the Northbrook Hilton.
