Add Crain's to the long list of endorsements that David Hoffman and Toni Preckwinkle have racked up as they head toward next week's Democratic primary election.
The editorial board lauded
Preckwinkle's independence, noting her political "freedom to fight for
reforms that reduce the supply of pork in county government":
Unlike some of her opponents, Ms. Preckwinkle doesn’t have an army of payrollers to support, or political debts to repay to Mike Madigan. This would give her more freedom to fight for reforms that reduce the supply of pork in county government.
Her policy positions reflect an understanding of what’s needed to bring efficiency and fiscal stability to Cook County.
Hoffman sealed the endorsement based on his record of "independence and integrity":
Mr. Hoffman represents a clean break with the political practices that brought national disgrace to Illinois. He has no ties to the old Democratic machine [...]
As inspector general for the city of Chicago, Mr. Hoffman showed the courage and independence to stand up to Mayor Richard M. Daley over corruption at City Hall. And he’s not piling up political IOUs in his run for the Senate. He refuses campaign contributions from political action committees and lobbyists.
