General Assembly To Take Up Crime Lab Reforms

This week the General Assembly will attempt to address the state's egregious backlog of DNA "rape kits" through a bill introduced at the behest of Attorney General Lisa Madigan. The measure would require police to turn evidence of sexual assault over to the state's crime lab more quickly. Also under the measure, all untested kits sitting in police storage would have to be taken to the lab within 30 days of the bill becoming law.
