Parent groups and community activists are planning to fight a proposal from Sen. James Meeks (D-Chicago) stripping hundreds of Chicago local school councils of their power to hire principals and direct some school budgeting. The legislation would give final authority to the district’s central office, leaving the councils in place as advisory panels.
