Dems Shoot To Extend Unemployment Benefit Deadline Through 2010

Last night, Senate Democrats unveiled their latest unemployment benefit extension proposal, which is part of a larger package that contains tax break extensions, transportation funding, and aid to states. If approved, Congress would extend the current provisions retroactively from March 1 through December 31 at a cost of $70 billion over ten years.  As we explained yesterday, this type of proposal would not provide an additional round of benefits to those who have exhausted the 50-plus weeks already approved by Congress.
