Now that the Illinois Supreme Court has decided that nonprofit hospitals must provide an adequate amount of charity care in order to keep their tax-exempt status, state lawmakers may have to determine how much charity is "adequate." In 2006, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan backed legislation requiring nonprofit hospitals to dedicate 8 percent of their annual income to charity care, but that bill was voted down in the General Assembly.
