Evanston's city council voted 9-0 on Tuesday night to ask developers for ideas on the best practices available for building wind turbines offshore in Lake Michigan to power the city. Under the initial plan, Evanston would install dozens of 200-foot tall wind turbines six to nine miles off the beach with the goal of powering Evanston's 30,000 homes. There is some concern that the huge turbines would upset the ecological balance of the lake and create an eyesore for city residents.
