A new poll conducted by the Illinois Coalition Against Tobacco found that 74 percent of Illinois voters would support legislation raising taxes on cigarettes by $1 -- from $.98 cents per pack to $1.98 per pack. The national average for cigarette taxes is $1.38 per pack. Advocates of SB 44, which passed the State Senate last year but is stalled in the House, say doubling the tax would bring in an extra $320 million annually.
