To quell surging violence in some Chicago neighborhoods, State Reps. John Fritchey (D-Chicago) and LaShawn Ford (D-Chicago) have asked Gov. Pat Quinn and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley to allow national guardsmen to patrol the streets. Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis responded that he didn't think "the National Guard is the solution." So far this year, 113 people have been killed across Chicago.
UPDATE (3:00 p.m.): Since unveiling their plan yesterday, Fritchey and Ford's proposal has been met with skepticism. Echoing Jody Weis, Rev. Michael Pfleger penned a Tribune op-ed arguing that the National Guard should only be used "as a last resort when all else has been tried," which has not happened yet. Mayor Richard Daley also said he won't support the idea, although he left open the possiblity that it could be "something to think about" as a temporary fix down the road.
