Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) and Rep. Sander Levin (D-MI) introduced this morning a measure to extend the filing deadline on the existing tiers of emergency federal unemployment benefits through the end of the year. The measure, which will be attached as an amendment to H.R. 4213, would also extend the federal subsidy for unemployed workers who are paying for COBRA health insurance coverage. The House could take up the legislation before the end of the week. The Senate, which is still debating its financial reform package, would subsequently have to approve it. If no action is taken by the end of of the month, over a million people will exhaust their benefits.
