The latest Rasmussen poll shows a "virtual toss-up" between Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Alexi Giannoulias and Republican Mark Kirk (who led by eight points at the end of April). Below are the new results, with the findings from Rasmussen's past three polls in parentheses:
Giannoulias: 39% (38%,37%, 44%)
Kirk: 42% (46%, 41%, 41%)
Rasmussen points out that the poll suggests that much of the electorate is following the controversy over Kirk's embellishment of his military record, which would explain the drop in his support:
Sixty-two percent (62%) of Illinois voters say they’ve been following news stories about Kirk and his military service, and 63% say this news is important in terms of how they vote this November. Thirty-two percent (32%) say Kirk’s misstatements about his military record are not important in how they vote.
