Board members from the FutureGen Alliance, a major multinational coalition of energy companies, will meet in Washington Tuesday to determine whether or not they will continue their partnership with the Department of Energy to develop a "clean coal" plant in Illinois. Earlier this month, the government scrapped its plans to build the nation's first commercial-scale coal plant equipped with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology in downstate Mattoon, decided to use the site only as an underground storage unit for carbon.
UPDATE (9/1): At its board meeting, the FututreGen Alliance agreed to back the Department of Energy's modified proposal.
