Just three days after UNITE-HERE Local 1 workers employed at Chicago's Sheraton Hotel walked off the job temporarily, union members at an undisclosed Hyatt location are planning to go on strike Friday.
Chicago's 6,500 hotel employees have been working without a contract for over a year and contract negotiations have been acrimonious. Hyatt workers voted to authorize a strike in July and have held several public demonstrations this summer. The union is asking for small wage and benefit increases as well as protections against forced overtime and layoffs. Hyatt is arguably the most influential operator in the industry.
