Sixteen people turned in applications to Mayor Richard Daley's office for three aldermanic vacancies. The applicants are hoping to finish the terms of three aldermen -- Toni Preckwinkle (4th Ward), Ed Emith (28th Ward), and Tom Allen (38th Ward) -- who left city council this week. Daley has 60 days to choose who will sit for the remainder of the term. Once the mayor makes his picks, he will have appointed 21 of the 50 sitting Council members. Of the 16 who applied, 11 are candidates for aldmerman, hoping to be elected to a full four-year term in the 2011 election.
