Berkeley School District 87 was accused of religious discrimination after it denied a Muslim teacher time off for a pilgrimage to Mecca in a lawsuit filed yesterday. According to the suit, the middle school teacher requested unpaid leave in 2008 to perform the annual pilgrimage, which is a pillar of the Islam faith, but was denied. The teacher then resigned her position with the school. The lawsuit seeks reinstatement and backpay for the teacher.
