After procedural votes in the Senate this morning, repeal of the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy moved forward, while the DREAM Act fell short.
With six Republicans -- including Sen. Mark Kirk -- supporting a move to break a filibuster on ending the 17-year policy that prohibited gays from serving openly in the military, the repeal appears destined for passage later this afternoon. The roll call was 63-33.
Earlier, a move to break a filibuster on the DREAM Act, which would clear the way for some undocument immigrants to apply for permanent status, fell, 55-41. The bill needed 60 votes to clear the Republican filibuster. Kirk sided with Republicans in blocking the bill.
UPDATE (5:49 p.m.): The stand-alone repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" officially passed the Senate this afternoon by a vote of 65-31. The bill now awaits President Obama's signature.
